Prepare The Inside Of Your Home

The first step is to clear away all clutter. Tidily. Don't just stuff things into cupboards and hope that out-of-sight is ok. Would-be buyers will look in cupboards and if they are full of clutter and are untidy looking, they can be put off your house.

  • The interior of all cupboards - especially units in the kitchen - should be freshly cleaned and tidily stocked, and kept that way.

  • This may be the time to throw out some items, to clear the decks, as it were.

  • Interior paint work should, ideally, be in neutral shades.  Bright colour schemes are not necessarily enjoyed by others, and pale creams, white and pastel shades are considered to give the best neutral look. A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for brightening up your house interior and giving it a fresh look.

  • Get rid of any lingering smells, whether they be from pets, smoking - or teenagers! Don't try to conceal smells by having bread baking or having freshly cut flowers on display. Buyers will see through that ploy. Rather, get to the source of the odour and deal with it. If necessary, remove and replace carpets that retain bad odours, old trainers, pet bedding and ashtrays. Wash curtains, cushion covers and other odour retaining linens.  You would be well advised to allow smoking only outdoors once you start to refurbish your home.

  • Some people do not like pets, so keep yours outside.

  • If you have a fireplace that is used, ensure that it is kept clean and tidy.

  • Mend or replace anything that is broken or unsafe such as window catches or glass, door handles, light switches.

Once you have made these improvements you will need to ensure that your home is kept tidy all the time until you have a firm buyer. This could be for quite a few months. If you have young children or pets you will need to clear up after them constantly to keep the place looking good.

However, all the effort put into refurbishing your home should create a good impression that will entice buyers to look over the property. If they like what they see, they may return for a second look, thereby increasing your chance of an offer and a sale.
